Coimbatore: Members of the Citizen Forum have urged addition of all omitted names in the voters list for the upcoming local body elections.
Addressing a press meet here at the Coimbatore Press Club here on Friday, Parasar M Pandya on behalf of the forum highlighted the discrepancies in the updated voters list released by the district administration ahead of the local body elections.
"Ward numbers 23 and 25 of R S Puram are now consolidated and brought under ward number 71. While during Parliamentary elections, there were 11,701 voters in the 23 and 25 wards but how the voter list has only 9159 names", he questioned.
"This implies that around 2542 names have been eliminated from the list. Similarly, overall two lakh voter names have been excluded within the Coimbatore Corporation limits", he alleged.
"While the government campaigns for 100% voter turnout, on the other hand such careless omissions of existing voters from the list is highly condemnable and undemocratic. It violates the rights of the people to chose their leader. However, it'a not too late to rectify the issue. The Corporation and the TN Election Commission have a complete statistics of voters and they could rectify it on priority", he opined.
Parasar Pandya also apprised that their forum had alerted all the political parties of the issue and if necessary action is not been taken by the District Administration and the Corporation, they would approach the High Court for redressal.
