Coimbatore: Over 800 DMK cadres were arrested for protesting in front of South Thasildhar office on Thursday against the Suez water distribution agreement and increase in property tax. Until last night the police denied permission for the protest.

This protest is among the umpteen protests staged by DMK against the City Corporation for awarding 24/7 water distribution project to Suez, a multinational company. The protestors also questioned the City Corporation for not providing basic amenities to the people like roads, sanitation etc.

The demonstration was headed by MLA Karthik of Singanallur constituency. District Executive committee members of the party including former Minister Pongalur Palanisamy took part.

Addressing the media, MLA Karthik demanded that the Corporation should revoke the 26-year contract with Suez. "Sanctioning such long term projects in the absence of a local body council cannot be accepted. Instead of focusing of such undemocratic things, the Corporation should focus on the pressing civic issues at all 100 wards of the city."

He also apprised that DMK will not give up until the Corporation pays heed to their demands. "Even for holding protests in a peaceful way, the police are denying permission because of the pressure from the ruling party", he alleged.

The arrest of 800 plus DMK cadres created a furore in front of the South Regional office.
