Coimbatore: Pavements painted in vibrant colors and overhead shades greet commuters at Raja street and Big bazaar street, as the Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) initiative by Coimbatore Corporation in association with GIZ took off in a colourful note.

To promote non-motorised transport in the city, CCMC has collaborated with GIZ, a German agency who has been roped in for technical guidance for many projects under the smart city project.

Marking the beginning of the initiative, the town hall area was painted with vibrant hues of colors which garnered the attention of the Coimbatoreans.

“As part of promoting NMT, GIZ had identified 300 Kms and 26 centres in the city. Pedestrian-friendly measures will be adopted in these ear marked centres. The idea is to streamline movement of vehicles and enable more space for pedestrians and cyclists“, said Ranjith Parvathapuram, Project Coordinator of GIZ.

Apart from colourful roads, wooden structures and sarees are used as overhead shades to protect pedestrians from scorching Sun.

“Roads are identified based on pedestrian movement, Big bazaar street, Cross cut road and Raja street are among the few roads we have identified. A pilot study for two weeks to get feed back from people will be conducted”, added Ranjith.

Saibaba Kovil, Hopes College, Cross cut road are the few other centres identified by the agency for NMT. The project includes setting up pedestrian paths, zebra crossing, seating arrangements and parking space.
