Santhanam (51) and his Selvi (45) from Kovilpatti are working for a hosiery company in Tirupur. They have been living with their family for the past 21 years in the Poochikkadu area in Mangalam Road in Tirupur.
In this scenario, on September 5, Santhanam procured a loan of Rs. 3700 for high interest rate from one of his relative, Selvam (48). As agreed upon, Santhanam paid Rs 400 each week towards principal and interest. It is reported that after paying Rs.1800, he was unable to pay interest for the last two weeks, due to unemployment.
Meanwhile, on November 19 Selvam and his men brutally assaulted Santhanam and his family in their home. Following which, Santhanam and his wife were admitted at the government hospital for treatment.
"Even after filing a police complaint on Selvam, Police did not take any action", alleges Santhanam.
To garner the attention of the officials, Santhanam tried to self-immolate by pouring a bottle of petrol in front of the Tirupur Collector's office, this morning.
He was rescued by the police who later took him to the police station (central).
