Coimbatore: City police commissioner Sumit Sharan on Monday inaugurated 73 security cameras in the Ramanathapuram Police Station Jurisdiction.
Around 73 CCTV cameras have been installed at various locations especially bus stands and lone residential areas under the D-1 Police Station, Ramanathapuram Jurisdiction.
The city police has been actively undertaking the installation of security cameras, which is regarded as the third eye. CCTVs play an indispensable role in the police department to help them nab criminals, traffic violators, murderers, thieves, kidnappers drug dealers and other anti-social elements.
The camera installations were undertaken under the order of the Police Commissioner and under the guidance of the Deputy Commissioner, Law and Order Balaji Saravanan.
Security Cameras have already been installed in various police jurisdictions including RS Puram, Peelamedu, Saibaba Colony, Kaatoor, Podanur, Singanallur, Vellalore and Saravanampatti.
It may be recalled that Police commissioner Sumit Sharan on November 21 inaugurated 32 CCTV cameras at the Slum Clearance Board apartment premises at Vellalore.
Addressing the gathering, Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan said that the South Zone has been installed with more CCTV cameras. "CCTV cameras play a crucial role in preventing crime and ensuring the safety of the public. With the cooperation of the public, we can reduce crime rates to a larger extent", opined the Commissioner.
He also spoke about how the entire city limits are connected to Google maps, for the first time, in TN. "Around, 9000 cameras are installed all over the city. And, 3000 traffic violation cases are registered everyday. Nearly 1.5 lakh cases have been investigated using data from security cameras. Due to excessive traffic in the busy hours, additional traffic police have been deployed to ensure smooth vehicular movement", he informed.
Speaking at the event, DC, L&O informed the Coimbatore city limits are connected to Google Maps. "Even under critical circumstances, the city police will be able to maintain law and order. Installation of CCTV cameras are not only helpful for the police but also ensures safety of the public", he added.
Seconding him, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Uma (Crime) said that installation of cameras has reduced crime rates and that the city is now under a security web. She also commended the generous contributions by private companies and social workers who helped in the installation of the cameras.
Deputy Commissioner Balaji Saravanan, Uma IPS, Mutharasan, Assistant Commissioner T Manuel, Inspector Murugesan, Sub-Inspector Jasis Irudhayaraj and many other officers took part.
Earlier, the renovated D-1 police station building was also inaugurated by the Police Commissioner.
