The dense tamarind trees near Therampalaym on MTP-Annur stretch which have escaped the axe in the name of road expansion works is a sight to cherish, opine the motorists who halt on this stretch to relax and escape from scorching sun.
"A decade back, the Coimbatore - Mettupalayam road was similar to this. A canopy of trees would welcome the motorist who drive down to the blue mountains. The temperature would be 2-3 degrees lesser, as the dense canopy would not allow sunlight to penetrate through it. Sadly, the stretch lost its charm", opined a motorist near Therampalayam.
Owned and maintained by the National highways, the tamarind trees yield good revenue to the NH as tenders are been issued for harvesting the fruits of the tamarind tree.
The public from the areas have jointly requested the State/National highways to safeguard these trees and refrain from axing them for developmental activities like road expansion, laying water pipelines and others.
