Soursop season ends in the Nilgiris; demand spikes

The Nilgiris: With the season of Soursop fruit coming to an end in the Nilgiris, the demand for the fruit known for his anti-cancerous properties has spiked. Among the exotic fruits grown in the Nilgiris, the Soursop which the locals believe to prevent cancer and other ailments begins at every September and ends in November.

The Nilgiris: With the season of Soursop fruit coming to an end in the Nilgiris, the demand for the fruit known for his anti-cancerous properties has spiked. Among the exotic fruits grown in the Nilgiris, the Soursop which the locals believe to prevent cancer and other ailments begins at every September and ends in November. 

Than the locals, the tourists who throng the Nilgiris show great interest to buy the fruit which is very expensive and difficult to source in the plain terrains. Based on the size and quality, the fruit is sold at Rs. 400 to 500 at outlets at Sim's Park in Coonoor and Burliyar in the Nilgiris.



Predominantly, Soursop is grown in vast ares at Burliyar, Yellanhalli and Vandisolai and also grown in parts of Gudalur. 

Due to its medicinal properties, the fruit is used for treating pneumonia, kidney ailments, intestines, skin diseases and boost immunity. The leaves and bark are also use as medicinal properties in Siddha medicine. 

In the coming years, the Horticulture department is planning to cultivate Soursop fruits at a larger scale.
