Coimbatore: Pointing that weekly markets or Sandhais held in the city are operated without proper permission and that the revenue of traders who pay taxes to the government and corporation are being hit because of those weekly markets, the members of 'Kovai Mavatta Swadeshi Vanigarkal Padhukaappu Sangam' have petitoned the civic body to ban the weekly markets.
Coimbatore: Pointing that weekly markets or Sandhais held in the city are operated without proper permission and that the revenue of traders who pay taxes to the government and corporation are being hit because of those weekly markets, the members of 'Kovai Mavatta Swadeshi Vanigarkal Padhukaappu Sangam' have petitoned the civic body to ban the weekly markets.
In the petition, the association stated that their members including small grocery shops, retail stores, vegetable vendors have obtained proper licenses and permission from the civic body to operate.
"The traders pay taxes including GST to the Corporation and government. And, for any delay in remitting taxes we are imposed with hefty fines or sometimes cancellation of our licenses, too", the petitioners noted.
"However, in the name of "weekly markets" certain private parties lure small vendors and set stalls in various parts of the city without any permission or license. Despite repeated representations to the District Collector and the Corporation, no action has been initiated on them", they alleged.
The petition also pointed at the weekly markets organised at Ward no 41 and 45 on Sundays which not only cause huge loss to the tax paying traders but also is against Corporation rules.
Speaking on this S.Lingam, President of the association stated, "In the past, the association has brought this issue to the notice of the concerned officials several times but no action was initiated.These weekly markets continue to operate and the private parties who organise these markets enjoy bountiful tax-free profits.
He also questioned why the Corporation is not concerned of the bulk waste generated by these weekly markets and on what basis are the field workers collecting waste from such weekly markets.
The President of the association further added that if the issue remains unattemded, the association will pass a resolution for "No tax movement" and stop paying taxes.
