Coimbatore: A second-year B.Com student, Sneha (19) of PSG College of Arts and Science attempted suicide in front of the college campus by immolating herself on Tuesday morning.
Passers-by who witnessed Sneha dousing herself with petrol and setting herself ablaze, rushed to save her but the fire had reportedly spread all over her body. After much struggle, the public doused the fire and rushed her to the Coimbatore Government Hospital.
Later, Sneha's relatives who were informed of the incident transferred her from Coimbatore GH to the PSG Medical Hospital in Peelamedu where she is being administered intensive treatment for her burn injuries in the ICU.
Doctors say that Sneha's condition is critical since she has suffered 90 percent burn injuries.
According to sources, Sneha a resident of Thanjavur has been staying at a private hostel near Peelamedu. This morning, she had arrived from her native place, Thanjavur to attend semester exams. After she got down from the bus, she has immolated herself near a tea shop close to the college campus.
However, the reason for the student to take such an extreme step is yet to be known. The Peelamedu Police are investigating the case.
