Coimbatore: City police on Sunday arrested two men for illegally trading banned tobacco items stocked in a private godown.
Coimbatore: City police on Sunday arrested two men for illegally trading banned tobacco items stocked in a private godown.
In a bid to curb the sale of banned tobacco products, the city police are carrying out extensive surveillance for the past few months. Recently, the special team formed to keep a check on the movement of banned tobacco have arrested drug peddlers who have been targeting college students.
One such drug peddler who was arrested on November 15 revealed that banned paan masala and gutka products were being stocked at a godown that comes under B3 Variety Hall police limits.
Subsequently, a police team led by Deputy Commissioner, L. Balaji Saravanan searched the godown in Thomas street, Variety Hall Road and found 100 packets of banned cool lips, 350 pathan packets.

Following this, two men in the godown were interrogated and it was revealed that Dinesh (20) from Rajasthan owns the godown and has been involved in smuggling gutka products from Bangalore and sells here. The police arrested Yuvraj (20) of Thomas Road also who works with Dinesh in supplying gutka products within the city.
The city police then arrested the two men and seized banned gutkha products worth Rs 50,000.
