Team from CCMC to visit other cities to learn ways to handle Construction & Demolition wastes

Coimbatore: Recently, the Coimbatore Corporation was accorded with top rank for timely implementation of smart city projects, however the million dollar question on setting up of the recycling plant to handle Construction and Demolition (C&D) wastes remains unanswered.

With no place to dump the C&D wastes, people have been dumping them at empty plots, along the bunds of water bodies or even worse inside the water bodies too. While conservation NGOs are striving hard to pool in volunteers to clear such debris dumped on the bunds and water bodies, lack of a proper place and method to handle such wastes seems to point fingers at the Corporation.

Following the announcement in 2016 of the C&D recycling plant in Ukkadam, the project did not move an inch. Citing several reasons like delay in machinery, poor execution by the organisation which earned the tender and others, CCMC could not realise the project.

While it was expected that steps would be taken on war footing to gear up to open the recyling plant but CCMC has planned to depute a team of officials to three cities - Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Delhi to study the models adopted there.

Speaking on this CCMC Commissioner said, "A team of officials including Deputy Commissioner, Prasanna Ramasamy would visit all three cities to study how they handle their C&D waste in their cities. These three cities are believed to have better models, hence will help us to arrive at the best model to handle C&D waste."

Coimbatore Corporation has roped in GIZ, a German agency to conduct a study adopted for handling C&D waste, both nationally and internationally. An official from GIZ would also accompany the Corporation team to these three cities.

Following the study, new tenders will be announced for setting up the plant, an official source confirmed.
