The expo which aimed to provide alternate solutions for managing and minimising wastes was inaugurated by Rural development & Municipal administration Minister S.P.Velumani at a private hall here on Saturday.
Around 82 service providers and manufacturers participated in the two- day expo organised by CCMC in association with non governmental organisations working in this field. The expo was meant to provide alternate solutions to bulk waste generators to help them manage their own waste.
Minister S.P.Velumani in his inaugural speech stated that Tamil Nadu generates 19,000 tonnes of waste per day and through effective solid waste management systems the load can be minimised. "Of the 850 to 1100 tonnes of wastes generated in 100 wards of Coimbatore, 100 tonnes come from bulk waste generators like hotels, restaurants, hospitals, apartments and institutions. Such bulk waste generators should gear up to find better ways to manage their wastes. Even the solid waste management rules direct them to do so."
"A good number of service providers with innovative solutions and manufacturers , mostly from Coimbatore have showcased their products and services in this expo. This expo would be very helpful for anyone who wants to manage their wastes, both individuals and bulk waste generators", the Minister added.
Speaking to the press, CCMC Commissioner said "Corporation has invited all bulk waste generators in the city to visit the expo to find effective alternate solutions. From, January 1, 2020, Corporation will not handle wastes generated by bulk waste generators. Earlier, we announced the deadline as August 1, 2019, however due to delay in setting the expo the dates were altered to January 2020."
He added that the expo will be a great platform to guide the bulk waste generators to adapt to alternative and innovative methods to manage bulk wastes. "Now with proper guidance and ample time, they have to find their own ways and means to handle the wastes, as Corporation will not handle their waste starting this new year. This 2020 will mark a new beginning in solid waste management", opined the Commissioner.
"The objective of the expo should reach to the masses, especially the younger generation. Families who go plan for a weekend outing should visit the expo. As only with inclusivity and public participation, we can transform our city garbage free", he added.
"The expo has waste management solutions from 5 kgs to 5000 kgs. People should come to the expo to update themselves on effective and innovative solutions in waste management," urged a Senior Corporation official.
CCMC has plans to release a directory containing details of the participants to guide anyone in need of suitable waste management solutions.
