Coimbatore: PSG Hospitals, affiliated to the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PSG IMS&R) and ORDI (Organization for Rare Diseases India) signed a MOU to set up Rare Disease Care Coordination Center (RDCCC) at PSG IMS&R campus here on November 5.
PSG IMS& R, a super speciality hospital with a medical college, one of the premium institute in the area serving the health care needs from last 30 years has taken a initiative along with ORDI to provide one stop solution to all Rare / Genetic diseases for patients and families under RDCCC.
With increasing numbers of rare diseases, it is estimated that 1 in 20 Indians are affected by some rare disease. Late diagnosis, subsequent delay in treatment reduces the chance of survival of patients. However, most of these conditions can be made better with supportive treatment and long term care and multidisciplinary care which is not easily available across hospitals.
RDCCC in India, is regarded to be need of the hour. We aim to build a critical infrastructure to connect patients with rare diseases and healthcare providers, disease area medical experts, recognized diagnostic centers, genetic counselors, caregivers, treatment options, national and international clinical trials and funding options.

"Patients suffering from Rare Diseases/ Genetic disorders remain undiagnosed for long. Over 70 million patients are estimated to be affected with rare diseases and 7000 such rare diseases are diagnosed across India", the Dean said.
