Farmers of Pollachi and Anamalai circle rejoice, as sluices of Aliyar dam was opened for irrigation

Coimbatore: Regarded to be an auspicious ceremony and a joyous moment for the farmers of the Pollachi and Anaimalai region, the sluices of the Aliyar dam was opened for irrigation on Monday. Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme SP Velumani showered flowers and flagged off the opening of the sluices.

Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme SP Velumani showered flowers and flagged off the opening of the sluices. 

While addressing the farmers, Minister SP Velumani said, "Due to the effective implementation of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Kudimaramathu scheme across the district, all water bodies are brimming with water, thus bringing a huge sigh of relief to the farming community."

Accepting the appeal putforth by the farmers of the region including the Ayakkadu Irrigation Farmers' Union, to release water for irrigation, CM Edapadi K Palanisamy approved to release water on November 2 from the Aliyar reservoir.

Water released from Aliyar through Pollachi canal "A" in Pollachi circle will benefit around 5621 acres of agricultural land, 6321 acres in Anaimalai Circle, 5558 acres in Vettaikaranputhur, 2529 acres in Sethumadai Canal in "A" zone and 2303 acres in Aliyar Combined Canal. Hence, a total of 22,332 acres will be irrigated with 2250 million cubic feet of water in a span of 70 days, the Minister added. 

And, 57 million cubic feet of water will be released in 250 acres of agricultural land to Elavakkarai pond from Aliyar Dam in a span of 11 days, he added.

Minister SP Velumani urged that the farmers need to use water efficiently and proper water management will assure them higher yields.



The event was attended by Deputy Speaker Pollachi V. Jayaraman, District Collector K.Rajamani, MLA Kasturi Vasu, DRO (Pollachi) Ravikumar, Public Works Inspection Engineer Muthusamy, Assistant Executive Engineer Leela, other government officials and farmers.
