Tamil Nadu Agricultural University's National Service Scheme launched a seven-day special camp at Thenkarai Panchayat, Perur Taluk, with over 600 undergraduate students participating in rural development activities, awareness programs, and advanced farming technology demonstrations across adopted villages in Coimbatore district.
Coimbatore: The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University inaugurated a special camp at Thenkarai Panchayat, Perur Taluk, Coimbatore district, with over 600 undergraduate students participating in comprehensive rural development initiatives.
Dr M Raveendran, the University Registrar and acting Vice Chancellor, inaugurated the seven-day camp, urging students to analyze the needs of villagers, plan rural development activities, and organize awareness programs accordingly. He emphasized the importance of disseminating and demonstrating advanced farming technologies to increase yield and farm revenue among the rural farming community.
Dr G Balasubramanian, Dean of the Center for Student Welfare (CSW), delivered a felicitation address, highlighting the NSS's role in undertaking significant activities that transform society and improve people's lifestyles. Dr P Rajkumar, Dean of Agricultural Engineering, spoke about the students' role in social activities, promoting cleanliness, health, and improved livelihood systems within the community.
K Mahalakshmi Prashanth, President of Thenkarai Panchayat, attended the event and encouraged students to engage in community work, understand community structures, develop their skills during their studies, and actively participate in social welfare activities.
The NSS of TNAU has adopted several villages across Perur Taluk for this special camp. Agriculture students, led by program officers Dr K Sivakumar and Dr S Thangeswari, adopted Sellappagoundenpudur and Thenkarai villages. Agricultural Engineering students, under the guidance of program officers Dr G G Kavitha Shree and Dr V Palaniselvam, adopted Chennanur and Krishnapurampudur.
Horticulture students, led by Dr V Sivakumar, adopted Mathipalayam and Karadimadai, while Biotech and Agribusiness students, led by Dr D Amirtham, adopted Kuppanur village.
These teams will reside in their adopted villages for seven days, conducting awareness programs on critical social issues such as blood donation, dengue prevention, alcohol eradication, rainwater harvesting, and organ donation. They will also participate in village cleanliness and environmental activities, and demonstrate advanced agricultural technologies to boost crop yields and farmers' income.
The seven-day NSS special camp has been meticulously planned and arranged by Dr G Balasubramanian, Dean (CSW), and Dr P Vetrivelkalai, the University's Programme Coordinator, with support from faculty members and program officers across various departments.
