Coimbatore: Much to the delight of the train passengers who frequently travel between Mettupalyam and Coimbatore, the MEMU train with modern compartments fitted with various facilities has replaced the passenger train that was operating for the past three decades between Mettupalayam and Coimbatore.

The daily passenger train which was operated by a diesel engine for three decades was later converted into an electric train after the demand from passengers in terms of convenience. The electric train attracted more passengers. Now, granting the request of train passengers on the Mettupalayam-Coimbatore route, the Government introduced the MEMU train between Mettupalayam and Coimbatore.

Subsequently, the passenger train that served the passengers for the past 30 years was terminated yesterday and the MEMU train service between Mettupalayam and Coimbatore commenced today. This sophisticated train manufactured by the Chennai ICF Railway Industry is fitted with engines on both sides. The train which has eight compartments can accommodate 614 seated passengers and 1781 standing passengers. For ensuring safety, 32 surveillance cameras have been installed.
Special pujas were conducted for the train at the Mettupalayam railway station, and the first MEMU train left at 8.30 am from Mettupalayam heading toward Coimbatore. Passengers were delighted with the launch of the new MEMU train service in Mettupalayam and celebrated the initiative of the Railways by distributing sweets.
