Coimbatore: Going the eco-friendly way, the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that is to come up at Vellalore dumpyard will be solar-powered as per official sources.

Tender for constructing the STP has been finalised and the private firm has been asked to submit the design after which work would commence. The STP at the dumpyard premises in Vellalore will treat the sewage collected from 69,000 households in 14 wards of Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur.

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) is implementing the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) project at a cost of Rs. 577.77 crores of which the STP is estimated to cost Rs. 48 crores. The entire project comes under the AMRUT scheme funded by the Asian Development Bank.

"The entire project with UGD lines, 30 pumping stations along with STP will be completed by October 2021 and commissioned by March 2022. This is the first time that all the pumping stations are fitted with odour control devices so that no foul smell will be emitted. The STP will be completed simultaneously and will be solar-powered which is the first of its kind in the district," stated a senior TWAD official.

"Nearly 35 percent of the work has been completed and wherever roads are dug up, maximum efforts to restore the roads are being carried out. If there are complaints, residents can immediately raise a complaint which will be addressed as early as possible," added the official.

Under the STP project, sewage pipelines will be laid for 439 km providing connections to 69,000 households. The STP plant at Vellalore which will have a capacity of 30.5 MLD is designed to meet the requirements of the estimated population of the two regions in 2035.
