The Nilgiris: The Nilgiris District Collector, J Innocent Divya announced at a press meet here that precautionary measures have been stepped up to face the brunt of the intensified Northeast monsoon rains.
Nilgiris district has been experiencing heavy northeast monsoon rains over the past week which has disrupted normal daily life for both locals and tourists. Minor landslides have resulted in trees being uprooted and boulders falling across roads frequented by motorists which has again disrupted traffic to a great extent.
The District Collector, Innocent Divya who took part at an event in Coonoor addressed the media saying, "As the northeast monsoon rains have been intensified, precautionary measures have been taken through the concerned Village Administrative Officers (VAOs). The VAOs have been advised to deploy JCB machines immediately after a landslide. Apart from that, permission has been given to the Highway Department to remove five trees that could be dangerous in the Aruvankadu area. Since it is raining, it is difficult to uproot the trees but once the rain stops, the trees will be removed. In case of continuous rainfall, declaring holidays for schools and colleges will be considered," she added.
