The Dalit residents belonging of Lenin Street and Ambedkar Nagar that fall under the 32nd ward of the Coimbatore Corporation have been facing a tough uphill task of burying and cremating their dead for many years.
More than 15,000 dalits who live there have been facing discrimination even in burying their dead, as the burial ground meant for Dalits does not have any facility like proper roads nor roofing for the cremation shed.
“If there is a death, we are forced to take the bodies to the burial ground through thorny bushes, private lands or even ditches, as there is no proper pathway,” lamented a resident.
They further added that despite regular complaints and petitions, officials from the district administration nor the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation have taken any action.
“A dignified burial is a basic right of humans. Citing our caste, we have been denied and put under immense turmoil even during times like death. Considering the difficult pathways leading to cremation site, many of our relatives do not come to attend the funeral rites,” they pondered.
