People who work hard for their livelihood without caring about their health generally do not take well to the suggestion of a physical health check-up. The most often-used excuse is the long queue one has to endure for even a general health check-up at hospitals, while most are worried about the cost of a health check-up. Despite their hectic lifestyles, some people will opt for a health check-up with a little encouragement, and if it is easily accessible while also costing less and saving time. To give them an opportunity, the Central Government's Railway Department has come up with a new scheme of setting up health check-up ATMs at railway stations.
The purpose of the ATM project is to make passengers at railway stations visit these ATMs while awaiting 3 to 5 minutes for their train. The passenger can avail a health check-up at these ATMs which includes 20 types of tests like one's BP, heart rate, sugar intake, BMI and so on. Passengers need to pay just Rs. 50 while railway employees need to pay only Rs. 10. Two staff nurses are stationed close to these ATMs while detailed information can be received from the doctors through video conferencing.
The scheme which has been set up in a few railway stations in the Northern States has been well received by passengers. Over 200 people use these health ATMs daily at the Secunderabad railway station. When the Salem regional railway officers were questioned on when the scheme is to be introduced at the Coimbatore railway station, the officials clarified that they had not received any plan for the project at the Coimbatore railway station. "Once the project is announced, the health check-up ATMs will be set up at the Coimbatore railway station," they opined.
