Nanammal, a Padma Shri recipient and a yoga instructor born on 24th Feb 1920, left people across the world spellbound with her yoga practices even at the age close to 100.
Born in an agricultural family at Zameen Kaliayapuram, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Nanammal has been practising yoga from the age of 8.
She mastered over 50 asanas from her father. And has been religiously practicing and teaching them to people. After her marriage, she moved to Negamam and has trained more than one million students over a period of 45 years. Known as India's oldest yoga trainer, Nanammal had a vision to train atleast 100 students per day at her 'Ozone Yoga Centre' established by her, here.
Notably, 600 of Nanammal's students have become Yoga instructors around the world.
Even those asanas which were regarded to be very difficult by youngsters was done by the 100-year-old Nanammal at ease and perfection.
In recognition of her outstanding talent in yoga, Nanammal was awarded Padma Shri in 2018 and also won the Nari Shakti Puraskar award in 2016. She was conferred with the Yoga Ratna award by the government of Karnataka in 2017. Nanammal made an attempt to get into the Guinness Book of Records by teaching yoga to 20,000 students in Coimbatore.
The death of such an inspiring human has left everyone in void. Her body has been kept at Anandam Yoga Centre at Athipalayam which is been run by her family members. Her last rites will take place at Thudiyalur crematorium tomorrow, Sunday.
