Cultivation of mountain vegetables is a primary means of livelihood for locals in the district, next only to tea cultivation. In Kotagiri, mountain vegetables like carrots, beans, cabbage, beetroot and potatoes are cultivated in large areas, especially in Nedugula, Kurukathi and Kavilorai.
Since streams in these areas had been clogged, rainwater entered fields resulting in damage of crops. In most areas, crops such as carrots and cabbage that were ready for harvest got submerged in water. In spite of maintaining the fields, farmers were helpless to protect their crops completely and hence suffered from heavy losses.
About 60 acres of vegetable farms have reportedly been damaged in the recent rains. With the estimated loss being around Rs. 50 lakhs, locals and farmers have requested the district administration to take immediate steps to prevent further damages in the future, especially during the monsoon season.
