Tirupur: Ending a long wait over a decade, Tirupur government hospital is all set to become a medical college. Following the approval from the Medical council of India, Six districts- Tirupur, Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul and Virudhunagar will get medical colleges.

Ever since Tirupur was formed as the district before ten years, demand for establishing a medical college has been raised . Despite the district having more than 25 lakh population , Tirupur does not have tertiary hospital and it has been highly dependent on Coimbatore. Tirupur GH is a 750 bedded hospital and handles more than 650 patients in a day. Minimum land required for establishing the medical college in an urban area is 10 acres but Tirupur GH has 27 acres in its fold. Now MCI has given approval for 150 seats and preliminary work to start the college has started .
According to a senior doctor, “Tirupur GH has many advanced facilities including neonatal intensive care unit, emergency obstetric and newborn care services, psychiatric ward and other basic facilities including trauma care.”
“But it does not have vital facilities like head injury treatment center, once the medical college is established such advanced facilities would be available here. At present patients are referred to the Coimbatore medical college hospital, if higher treatment was needed,” the doctor added.
Tirupur being the garment city has thousands of textile industrial units and people working in the industry suffer from respiratory diseases, which can be treated effectively once the medical college with advanced facilities is established here.Patients are referred from nine other government hospitals in the district , a medical college would effectively reduce travelling time and a 24 hour facility would provide a greater chance for saving lives during emergencies.
