New Delhi: The Minister for Municipal Administration and RDI, S P Velumani received the 'e-panchayat puraskar' award from the Union Minister for Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, Agriculture and Farmer's Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar. Tamil Nadu was conferred with this award for being the top-performing state in facilitating the use of ICT ( Information & Communication Technology Tools) in empowering panchayats. Apart from this, Tamil Nadu has received 10 other national awards under various categories from the District level to the Panchayat level.

It is to be noted that all the Village Panchayats in Tamil Nadu have been established with office buildings, computers and connectivity. The Village Panchayat Secretaries have also been trained to operate computers. Hans Raj Verma, Principal Secretary, Rural Department and Panchayat Raj Department, Government of Tamil Nadu and Palanisamy, the Director of Rural Development Department and others were present at the award ceremony.
