Coimbatore: With the onset of Northeast monsoon, a review meeting to take stock of the preparedness to handle contingencies was held at the Collectorate on Wednesday.
Coimbatore: With the onset of Northeast monsoon, a review meeting to take stock of the preparedness to handle contingencies was held at the Collectorate on Wednesday.
The meeting that was headed by Harmander Singh, Principal Secretary (Municipal Administration and Water Supply) was attended by District Collector K. Rajamani. Corporation Commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavath, DRO Ramathurai Murugan, Program Director of District Rural Development, Ramesh Kumar and other officials of various departments.
The Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Water Supply recommended the officials to gear up precautionary measures to handle monsoon rains, by identifying sensitive and low-lying areas prone to heavy rain.
He also advised the officials to ensure that the sewer feeds are repaired and are in good condition to prevent waterlogging during rains. He insisted that tree sawing machines and electric motors should be kept ready to clear uprooted trees uproots and clear rainwater stagnation.
"All water bodies must be de-silted and free flow of water through water channels should be ensured. Timely notifications should be given to villages close to the banks of the river. And, adequate amount of sand bags should be stocked." he said.
He also noted that the electricity board must attend to repairs and power disconnections during rains, without delays.
Mr. Harmandar Singh also ordered the Public Distribution officials to take stock of the supplies and ensure adequate stock of essentials. Addressing the health officials, he urged to stock medicines related to flu and other monsoon related illnesses at all primary health centres.
The Principal Secretary stressed upon rainwater harvesting measures and directed to initiate awareness among the masses to install RWH structures at their places. He also insisted that drinking water must be well chlorinated before distribution.
He urged the Corporation to ensure to depute sufficient sanitary workers to all residential areas to check water stagnation and dispose any unused pots, old tires, plastics, planting pots, distillers and coconut shells which could turn into breeding sites for dengue mosquitos.
"Necessary care must be taken to ensure that places like public buildings, government offices, bus stops, theatres, restaurants, wedding halls, and construction sites are maintained cleanly. Any violations should be dealt strictly by imposing penalties", he noted.
He ordered that all government officers shall remain available at their respective head quarters through the monsoon season and should extend their cooperation during contingent situations.
Later, he inspected the functioning of 24-hour drinking water project at Bharathi Park, Avinasilingam College Road.
He also advised the Dean of CMCH to ensure quarantine wards for dengue infected patients and appoint doctors on rotational shift to monitor patients 24/7. He also urged to keep the hospital stocked with adequate medicines to treat ailments arising during rainy seasons.
