Coimbatore: The work on the revival of waterbodies in Coimbatore had been taken up with vigor and determination by the Siruthuli group. For the past two years, the waterbodies under the supervision of Siruthuli namely Kumaran Kuttai (Puddles), Kannimaar Kuttai, Ayyan Kuttai and others have been filled with water owing to good southwest and northeast monsoons. This has brought a lot of cheer to people residing in those areas.
Coimbatore: The work on the revival of waterbodies in Coimbatore had been taken up with vigor and determination by the Siruthuli group. For the past two years, the waterbodies under the supervision of Siruthuli namely Kumaran Kuttai (Puddles), Kannimaar Kuttai, Ayyan Kuttai and others have been filled with water owing to good southwest and northeast monsoons. This has brought a lot of cheer to people residing in those areas.
According to Thangavelu, a farmer from Maadhampaati , “The Kumaran puddle had dried up for over 30 years and just remained as a mountain of mud. I used to be sad just seeing it dry up. Not a day passed by without the thought of hoping to see it filled with water someday. The number of borewells have been increasing to meet the agricultural demands and so ground water too had begun to deplete. It was a very worrisome sight. There had been 7 layers of water bodies spread over 9 acres. Approximately 10 villages used to depend on this waterbody. After revival work was taken up by Siruthuli where the depth of these waterbodies were widened and the river banks strengthened, around 60 % has been filled up due to rains. Can there be anything more than this to bring joy to a farmer? There has also been an increase in the ground water level. This has made the region a very fertile land for agriculture and we remain indebted to Siruthuli,” opined an elated Thangavelu.
"This has been possible due to the permission and cooperation extended by the district administration, with a special mention to Minister S P Velumani who being in charge of development and special plans supported us in this mission. We are extremely grateful to all of them," responded Siruthuli in a press release.
"The ponds at Kumaran Kuttai, Kannimaar Kuttai and Ayyan Kuttai are the water resource for several villages. The soil in these parts is very fertile but since the ponds were not maintained, water could not be conserved and stored. But now with the incessant rains and the efforts of Siruthuli, the faces of farmers are gleaming with joy which brings a lot of satisfaction. We would continue our efforts in restoring water bodies with more enthusiasm," reiterated members of Siruthuli.
They added that the project cost for desilting Kumaran Kuttai was about Rs. 70 lakhs. "Furthermore, organisations like Robert Bosch Engineering India, Baker Huges Roots Organisation, Craftsmen Automation, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis and the Maadhampatti Farmers Association financially supported us. We are extremely grateful to these organisations," stated members of Siruthuli.
