Coimbatore: Officials at the State Bank of India in Mettupalyam refused to replaced a poor farmer's hard earned money that had been devoured by rats. The farmer requested the bank to replace notes worth Rs.50,000 since rats had bitten the notes kept at his home in Veliyangadu, Karamadai.

The Reserve Bank of India had advised all banks to remit old and torn notes on all working days. Similarly, in accordance with Article 2 (j) of the Reserve Bank of India RBI Act, 2009, it was communicated to all bank branches for the benefit and convenience of the public to have their torn and defective notes replaced at no extra charge.
On the advice of the Reserve Bank of India, Rangaraj who is a farmer from the Velliyangadu area had gone to the State Bank near Mettupalayam to replace his torn notes worth Rs. 50, 000 but officials at the bank reportedly refused to oblige and asked him to get it done in Chennai.
