Coimbatore: The city police on Tuesday arrested Suresh Kumar (49), owner of Dhanavarsha Tours and Travels and his wife Maheshwari (43) for allegedly duping many customers who had booked various national and international tour packages through their travel agency.
Coimbatore: The city police on Tuesday arrested Suresh Kumar (49), owner of Dhanavarsha Tours and Travels and his wife Maheshwari (43) for allegedly duping many customers who had booked various national and international tour packages through their travel agency.
The arrest was followed after a complaint was lodged by Muthukumarasamy, a resident of Sri Nagar, Hope College, near Peelamedu. Muthukumarasamy, a retired bank employee had approached Dhanavarsha Tours and Travels in Siddhapudur, to get a quote on a family trip to Andaman, in April. Suresh Kumar reportedly led him on stating that he had been in the travels field for a decade and taken his customers to national tours like Shirdi, Kulumanali, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and international tours like Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. He then quoted Rs. 40,000 per head and received Rs. 3,47,500 in two installments through online bank transfers made to his account by Muthukumarasamy.
Suresh Kumar had told Muthukumarasamy to collect the tickets on September 21. On the said date, when Muthukumarasamy approached the office, he found it locked. He tried to contact Suresh and his employees but their phones seemed to be switched off. He enquired about the company with people nearby the agency but none were aware of their whereabouts.
Muthukumarasamy then complained to Sumit Sharan, the Commissioner of Police stating the above scenario. It was later discovered that Sureshkumar had duped many others on the pretext of taking them on national and international tours for Rs.12,500 up to Rs. 2 lakh per person, also totalling to the tune of Rs. 6 crores.
Based on the orders of Sumit Sharan and under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners, Balaji Saravanan and Perumal, a special team comprising Soundararajan, Assistant Commissioner, Central Crime Branch, Cyber Crime Branch Inspector Mallika and Sub Inspectors Renuka Devi and Jamuna were investigating the case.
The special team then travelled to Chennai and conducted intense investigations there. Suresh's kin, friends and his employees were subjected to interrogation. It was revealed that Suresh changed his habitat frequently. Based on a tip-off received, the special team arrested Suresh Kumar and his wife Maheswari on October 22 and produced them to the J.M 7 court, today. The couple have been put behind bars at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
