Coimbatore: Karappan, the owner of Karappan Silks who spoke ill about the Hindu deities Krishna and Athivaradar has been booked under three sections by the Peelamedu police, following a complaint lodged by the BJP to the Coimbatore Commissioner demanding legal action against him.

Karappan (70), a resident of Sirumugai reportedly defamed Hindu gods at the Dravidar Iyyakka Tamilar meeting at Hotel Akshayam, Jupiter Hall near Nava India on September 29. The video of his reportedly defamatory speech against Hindu gods has gone viral on social media.
On October 19, Nirmal Kumar of the Hindu Munnai outfit complained about Karappan at the Peelamedu police station. Following this, keeping in mind that social harmony could be at stake and religious violence could be ignited, a petition was submitted to the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore on behalf of the BJP, on October 21.
On orders from the Commissioner of Police, Sumit Sharan, the Peelamedu police have filed a case under two sections upon Karappan, with regard to instigating religious violence (505(1)(b)), and (295(a)) for defaming a particular religion.
It is to be noted that Karappan has since then recorded a video stating that he had made a mistake in defaming Hindu gods and will not repeat it.
