Over 10 wild elephants had camped at the Nallamudi tea estate in Valparai this past week. This had caused workers on the estate to shun work. The tea estate management then tried to chase the wild elephants away. After several hours of struggle, apart from two wild elephants, the other elephants moved away from the tea estate and went into a nearby forest.
But a lone elephant with its two-year old calf remained in the tea estate since the calf's leg seemed to have been wounded, making it impossible for it to walk. Since the elephant and its calf have been moving inside the tea estate for the past one week, tea workers were reluctant to go about picking tea leaves.
Hence, wildlife activists have urged the Forest Department to take immediate steps to save the elephant's calf and provide immediate treatment for its foot.
