Brain dead woman's kin donate organs; 7 patients at KMCH gain new lease of life

A 38-year old woman, Thangamani met with an accident near Veppadai at around 6 pm on October 15. She was immediately taken to Erode GH for first-aid and then moved to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) on Avanashi Road for specialized treatment. During the treatment, Thangamani did not respond much and was declared brain dead on October 21. Thangamani is survived by her husband Palanisamy, daughters Nandhini and Gokila living at Chinnangadu, Patharai in Namakal. In spite of their grief, the family came forward generously to donate Thangamani’s organs.

On October 21, the multi-organ transplant team harvested Thangamani's heart valve, liver, kidneys, eyes, skin and bone. Of the harvested organs, the liver and one kidney were transplanted at KMCH, the other kidney, eyes skin and bone were sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore while the heart valve was sent to a private hospital

in Chennai. The bereaved family members reportedly felt proud that Thangamani's organs gave a new lease of life to seven needy patients.

Dr. Nalla G Palaniswami, Chairman, KMCH thanked the family for their bold and timely decision on organ donation. He added that the family's unselfish act of generosity will bring in more awareness toward the noble cause of organ donation.
