Coimbatore : Members of District Wholesale All Vegetables Merchant Association submitted a petition to CCMC Commissioner J. Sravan Kumar on Monday demanding basic facilities at MGR Vegetable Market functioning at Mettupalayam (MTP) road.
In the petition, the members highlighted the plight of the MGR Market which has been functioning at the MTP location for the past 25 years. The merchants stated that the market was started with 60 shops with roofing using cement sheets. The merchants were then promised of concrete buildings which till date has not been delivered.
"All our demands have fallen in deaf years as no action was initiated for the repeated representations made by us in person and through petitions", they alleged.
The merchants also mentioned of the plight of the market during rainy seasons. "Inundated shops and slushy pathways makes the market look miserable during rainy days. Not only the trade, tonnes of vegetables go wasted due to lack of proper place", they noted.
The petition also threw light on the hygienic issues around the market area which is a result of untimely collection of garbage. "Heaps of vegetable wastes are piled up around the market area. As the corporation workers do not clear them in a timely manner, the piled up wastes causes stench smell and invite infestations like rats and flies", the petitioners alleged.
