October 21 is observed every year as Police Commemoration Day recalling the heroism of policemen who died in the line of duty. To commemorate this day, policemen, social activists and students conduct various events.

Apart from the 21-gun salute, the Commissioner of Police, Sumit Sharan placed a wreath on the Martyr's Column amid gunshots to respect three police martyrs - Constable Rajarathnam who lost his life while nabbing a criminal in the year 1985, Head Constable Selvaraj who was assassinated in 1997 and Head Constable Chandrasekar who also died while trying to nab a man responsible for an accident.
The IG of West Zone, Periaiah, the Superintendent of Police, Sujith Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Balaji Saravanan and several other police officers paid tribute.
