Coimbatore: Tourists on the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) train were disappointed when the NMR service from Mettupalayam to Ooty that had been halted for three days due to landslides was once again halted right in the middle of a journey, this morning.
Coimbatore: Tourists on the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) train were disappointed when the NMR service from Mettupalayam to Ooty that had been halted for three days due to landslides was once again halted right in the middle of a journey, this morning.
The NMR train which is operational daily from Mettupalayam to Ooty is much sought after by tourists from across India as well as from foreign countries. These tourists book months in advance and wait for their long-awaited turn to travel in the world-famous mountain train to enjoy nature at its best.
Meanwhile, as a result of torrential downpours, multiple landslides disrupted the mountain rail route and hence the NMR service was halted from October 18-20. After the rail tracks were cleared, the mountain train service resumed this morning, with 100 tourists on board. The train left Mettupalayam railway station at 7.15 am to Coonoor.
When the train crossed Kallar and moved closer toward the Hillgrove railway station, a landslide occurred which caused damage on the railway tracks. The NMR train was forced to halt and was diverted back to Mettupalayam. The passengers were then taken by train till Kallar railway station and were then sent to Ooty in a TNSTC bus. Tourists who had long awaited the mountain train ride were sorely disappointed.
