Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Union arrived at the District Collectorate with banana and tapioca plants, petitioning the District Collector, K Rajamani and demanding compensation for damages caused by wild animals in agricultural lands.

The farmers alleged that wild animals like wild dogs and pigs are damaging crops in the areas of Sethumadai, Kaliyapuram, Semmanapathy, Thindamuthur, Alanthurai, Mathavarayapuram, Karadimadi, Thaliyur and Sirumugai where crops like banana, maize, tapioca and groundnuts are planted. They accused that officials have taken no action even after the Minister of Forests had ordered for the wild animals to be shot down. The petitioners urged the Chief Minister to provide compensation as done in neighbouring states.

They requested the Government to take steps to install solar power lines with 100 percent subsidy for farmers who are constantly affected by wild animals.
