Coimbatore : City Corporation's project of generating electricity using biodegradable wastes collected within Corporation limits was initiated on Saturday.

Simonetta Sommaruga, Minister for Environment, Energy and Transport in Switzerland inaugurated the project which will be funded by Switzerland. Officials from Switzerland, CCMC Commissioner and Special Officer Sravan Kumar and other officials were present.

Presently, the garbage collected at all 100 wards of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation is being sent to Vellalore garbage dumpyard. In a bid to promote wealth out of waste, the corporation is in the process of implementing a program to produce natural fertilizers with biodegradable wastes in the respective wards after the biodegradable and non-degradable wastes are segregated at source.

As a part of it, the Corporation has set up a system to generate electricity from biodegradable wastes which was inaugurated today.

About 1500 kg of biodegradable garbage collected per day in 2500 households in the Saibaba colony will be segregated at the newly inaugurated facility and will be converted to methane gas.

Then, with the methane gas, electricity will be generated through the generator and will be used to light 250 street lights in Saibaba colony.

The project is set up at a cost of Rs. 45 lakhs and can generate 150 to 170 units of electricity, 60 to 90 kg of cooking gas and 3000 kg of natural fertilizer. Officials said that the power generated from the facility will be used to operate the machines and therefore there will be no additional electricity requirement. It is also noteworthy that this electricity can light the street lights for 6 to 8 hours.
