Coimbatore : On behalf of the trade unions of the State Transport Corporations (STCs), district unions staged a demonstration here on Friday accusing the state government of trying to privatize the STC.

More than 1000 union workers from Nilgiris, Tirupur, Coimbatore and Erode took part in the protest which was held in front of the State Transport Headquarters located at Mettupalayam Road.

The protesting unions alleged that a secretive proposal is brewing to gradually privatize existing bus routes in the STC. They also noted that the Union government sanctioned 525 e-buses for eight cities in TN including Coimbatore under FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) scheme, however the buses will be operated by private operators and not the STC.

They opined that in the near future, the State government has plans to operate 2000 new buses on a similar basis which is against the welfare of the employees.

Further, the agitators raised slogans stressing that private buses should not be operated on the routes of the transport corporation. And, that the State government should not support the central government's conspiracy to destabilize the STC by privatising the sector instead should allot sufficient funds to run the STC, profitably.

Executives and office bearers of the  associations including LPF, CITU, AITUC, MLF, HMS, INTUC, DTSF took part in the protest.
