Smart city project continues to tamper with green cover; 20-year old tree destroyed by earthmover

Coimbatore : While the smart city proposers continue to claim that green cover would rapidly rise by the end of its implementation, actions are speaking louder than words, as the various development activities taken up under the project are seeing felling of trees.

Coimbatore : While the smart city proposers continue to claim that green cover would rapidly rise by the end of its implementation, actions are speaking louder than words, as the various development activities taken up under the project are seeing felling of trees.

In a recent incident, a 20-year-old Rain Tree, also known as Thoongu Vagai Maram was pushed over by an earth mover at Valankulam, while setting up artificial structures on the bounds of the lake adjacent to the Sungam By-Pass Road on Friday.

The contractor, JCP constructions had reportedly pushed over the tree while digging up sand from the lake bund to be used elsewhere. While one tree was completely uprooted, another tree also stands in jeopardy.

The issue was immediately taken to social media by activist K. Syed from Osai, who condemned the authorities for not being careful while handling with delicate environment.

“This is not the first incident of tree felling in the name of development in the same lake region. A few trees were damaged last month by another contractor while digging soil. It is important that such actions are fined immediately to stop more damage in the future,” he pointed out.

When Simplicity contacted the revenue officials, they were not available for any comments.
