In today's times, when flipping a coin to the destitute on the roadside is considered by each one as a thoughtful kind act. Although it is impossible to remember all those on the wayside as one passes by daily, not many stop to ask them why they are sitting on the sidewalk. Most assume that they are mentally ill or physically challenged, and never give go beyond to think if they could be helped.
But, Jinnah and Saravanan from Tirunelveli's 'Pasiyilla Tamilagam Trust' think differently. They are presently conducting a 100-day 15 cities project to help destitutes on the roadside, by grooming them and providing them with clean clothes. Thereafter, they are also sent back to their own homes or enrolled at a rehabilitation centre.
The Trust started in Tirunelveli on September 9 and extended their services to Coimbatore, today. "Not everyone on the road is mentally ill and yet most taunt them because of their ragged clothes and frightful appearance.
But after a shave, bath and attired in new clothes, it is surprising to see them become a different person. It is gratifying to help them move back to their homes as new people or enroll them in rehabs with the help of the local police," said Saravanan.
Nisar and Jaffer who travel with Saravanan and Jinnah help in grooming the destitute without any hesitancy showing their exemplary service-oriented mentality.
