Coimbatore: Pillur dam in Mettupalayam has reached its full capacity. Considering the safety of the dam, surplus water of 30,000 cubic feet has been discharged along four channels and flood alert has been sounded for people residing on the banks of River Bhavani.

The northeast monsoon rains have begun in Tamil Nadu much ahead of the date expected. Incessant heavy downpour began in Nilgiris and the Western Ghat region where Pillur Dam is located has been experiencing heavy downpour for the last two days causing the dam to reach almost its full capacity. The 100 ft dam has water brimming at 98 ft.
The District Administration has also requested people along the dams to move to safer places with Nilgiris district continuing to experience heavy downpours which may lead to discharge of more surplus water.
The Police Department has also been continuously warning people against stepping into the river for their baths, washing clothes or fishing.
It is to be noted that the Pillur Dam has reached its capacity for the fifth time this year. The surplus water from the dam flows into River Bhavani which then fills the Bhavani Sagar Dam. The water levels in this dam too has reportedly increased.
