Coimbatore : A massive elephant aged above 30 met with a tragic and painful death while trying to cross an Elephant Proof Trench (EPT), near Sethumadai in Pollachi, on Wednesday.

The male elephant had attempted to enter the farmland from the Reserve, about late evening but had reportedly slipped on the mud. Since it had fallen face first on the EPT, its tusks seem to have got stuck into the mud. Foresters claim that the animal must have suffered a very painful death by suffocation and pressure on the thoracic cavity.
