Coimbatore: A new biogas facility near Bharathi Park in Coimbatore is to be inauguarated by Switzerland's Environment and Energy Minister, Simonetta Sommaruga on October 19.
The biogas plant has a total capacity of 1.5 tonnes which will convert organic waste collected from the households into electrical energy once it becomes operational. Funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the plant could be the one-of-its-kind facility established across Tamil Nadu. Implemented under the CapaCITIES project at an estimated cost of Rs. 45 lakhs, the plant could generate electricity up to 150 kV per day.
Similar to Coimbatore, SDC is also initiating various projects across the country in Rajkot , Siliguri and Udaipur . The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has been a partner of India for close to 60 years. Since 2011, SDC’s programme focuses specifically on the issue of climate change and environment.
Capacity Building for Low Carbon and Climate Resilient City Development (CapaCITIES) is the project of SDC which aims to enhance the capacities of city authorities in four partner cities to plan and implement mitigation and adaptation measures, initiate city-level climate change mitigation measures for priority sectors, initiate city-level climate change adaptation measures for priority sectors and increase awareness on low carbon and climate-resilient city development in India and other countries.
