Coimbatore: About 70 people who were diagnosed with dengue fever at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore this month have returned home healthy according to the Coimbatore Government Hospital Dean, Dr. Asokan.

Hundreds of people had died of swine flu and dengue fever, last year in Tamil Nadu. The Health Department subsequently prevented the spread of the disease through various efforts. Special wards had been set up in Government Hospitals to treat patients with fever, round the clock which reduced the impact of the disease.

But with the southwest monsoon rains lashing the State and bringing in its wake different types of viral diseases, including dengue and malaria, Government medical colleges and Government Hospitals in Tamil Nadu have had to step up efforts to establish special wards for dengue and viral fever.

Patients from various districts have been admitted at the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital and are being treated. Dr. Asokan says, "Patients from various districts including Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam are being treated for dengue fever at the Coimbatore Government Hospital. Many people have been cured of dengue fever after being treated here. In particular, 73 people who were treated for dengue fever last month have returned home. This month, 70 people have returned home, completely well. 18 more people are being treated now," he added.
