Coimbatore : The substantial rise in the garbage output at Vellalore dumpyard here has prompted the City Corportaion to conduct a technical study to ascertain the cause for the rise in garbage output.

According to Corporation data, Vellalore dump yard has been receiving almost 950 metric tonnes of waste every day. However, recently the dump yard is receiving almost 200 tonnes additional garbage. The increase from 1050 metric tonnes to 1150 metric tonnes has caused concern to the corporation who are clueless about the sudden spike in garbage volume.

"Before three years, it was ascertained that Vellalore dumpyard has been receiving 950 metric tonnes of wastes per day. As we don't have an assessment on the recent volume, CCMC is planning to hold a study to ascertain the waste generated currently by house holds", noted a senior corporation official.

The official also added that "As the vision of CCMC is to complete cut down the garbage volume, the technical study would enable us understand the areas to be addressed and create more awareness on source segregation. 'Zero' water generation would be made possible only after the 67 micro composting centres goes operational."

Currently, of the total waste generated in the city, 59% consists of wet waste and 19% is recyclable plastic which together comprises of 78%. To handle this 58% organic waste and to decentralise processing of waste, micro composting centres (MCC) are being set up across the city.

Each MCC is designed to handle 2-5 tonnes of wastes. And, once all 67 MCCs become fully operational, the volume of wastes sent to Vellalore dumpyard will br drastically reduced.
