Coimbatore : Farmers petitioned the District Collector, K Rajamani urging for turmeric seed pods to be provided at 100 percent subsidy price.

Farmers allege that turmeric cultivation being practised in the suburbs of Coimbatore district has been reduced from being cultivated in several thousand acres to a few hundred acres, in the past few years. The petitioners lamented that the price of turmeric which used to be in the range of Rs. 5,500 to Rs. 8,500 per quintal had been reduced to Rs.6,500, and accused the Government of not having any schemes to motivate the cultivation of turmeric.

The farmers stated that even though there is a rule that the farmers can reserve the turmeric they had produced in the respective regulated retail outlets to avail a loan, not all farmers are benefited from it as they could not make the best use of this. This has been the case due to the inadequate storage space in the outlets. hence, the farmers demanded that the Government provide turmeric seeds at a 100 percent subsidy price as well as to take care of the production cost.
