Coimbatore: Members of the National Progressive Auto Workers Union petitioned the District Collector, K Rajamani at the Public Grievance Camp held at the District Collectorate today. They sought safety for the auto drivers in the city and to also provide for the education cost of their children.
Coimbatore: Members of the National Progressive Auto Workers Union petitioned the District Collector, K Rajamani at the Public Grievance Camp held at the District Collectorate today. They sought safety for the auto drivers in the city and to also provide for the education cost of their children.
The petition stated that there had been recent assaults and murders of auto drivers in Coimbatore. Recently, in a tragic incident, a few anti-social activists who were working at a construction site attacked and killed an auto driver in broad daylight, in Saravanampatti, using construction tools. This incident caused fear among the auto drivers as well as the public.
The petitioners stated that driving autos was their means of livelihood and hence demanded appropriate safety measures for all auto drivers in the city. They also highlighted that the Employees Welfare Board takes care of the education cost of the children of construction workers from Classes 1 to 12 and hence urged the Government to provide financial assistance for the education of children of auto drivers too. The petitioners urged the Central and State Governments to also provide bank loans for buying autos at subsidized interest rates.
