Coimbatore: The Farmers Union filed a petition at the Public Grievance camp held at the District Collectorate, appealing for air pollution measuring equipment to be fixed for upto six months in the Thadagam area so that the exact levels of air pollution can be determined.

Addressing the media, members of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Union said, "With the current downpour in the Thadagam area, the pollution level in the air will be less. Moreover, the brick kiln owners are not operating their kilns now and the trucks are not being operated. Thus air pollution will be less, and so it cannot be accurately measured now. So, calculating the levels of pollution in this scenario will not be of any use. Instead, let the equipment be fixed upto six months so that the actual level of pollution in the air can be obtained as the brick kilns will be re-operated, and so also the operation of lorries."
The petitioners said that the amount of rainfall in the Thadagam area has also decreased with water streams, gutters and reservoirs dry due to sand mining for brick kilns. They alleged that even agriculture had been severely affected and hence it will not be correct to take measures depending on the current measurements.
It is to be noted that the air pollution measuring equipment has been installed in nine villages to quantify the air pollution levels in the city's Thadagam area.
