The Nilgiris: Residents in Geddai, near Manjur in Nilgiris are panic stricken owing to about 10 wild elephants rampaging the area and destroying property.
Over 10 elephants had camped in Geddai and were destroying the crops and also straying into the residential area of the Electricity Board employees. Last week, five wild elephants smashed the doors of the Electric Inspection House and damaged doors of the residences of the EB employees. A day ago, wild elephants broke into the door of a vacant house at night and demolished the house of Selvadurai who also reported destruction of property.
Upon information, forest officials arrived at Geddai on Sunday and chased away the wild elephants camping there by lighting fireworks. Forest officials are continuing to monitor the elephant herd, to ensure that they do not return to the residential area.
