1000 saplings planted along Bhavani River Basin

Coimbatore : In order to restore native species and conserve the upper Bhavani River Basin, ITC Mission Sunehrakal along with Coodu Organisaion organised a one day plantation drive at Ukkainayur Tribal Village in Karamadai here on Friday.

Coimbatore : In order to restore native species and conserve the upper Bhavani River Basin, ITC Mission Sunehrakal along with Coodu Organisaion organised a one day plantation drive at Ukkainayur Tribal Village in Karamadai here on Friday.

Titled ‘Restoration of Commons & Conservation of Biodiversity at Upper Bhavani river basin’, the project saw the plantation of 1000 tree saplings and throwing if seed balls belonging to 12 tree species including Red Wood and Neem.



Inaugurating the drive, M. Senthil Kumar, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore, congratulates the ITC Mission Sunehrakal Water stewardship project being implemented at Upper Bhavani river basin adding that it was educating Tribals and non-tribal farmers to conserve Water and Forest resources. 

“Since Tribes are closely associated with Forest, they can play a major role in conservation of Natural resources. This drive will enhance greenery in the forest fringe areas and lead to conservation of flora and fauna in Coimbatore. This will also help increase water flow in Bhavani River,” he said.

Sateesh, Head of Human Resources, ITC PSPD Kovai explained about the water conservation projects of ITC.

“ITC renovated over 400 water storage structures in the last three years in association with consumers and Local Gram Panchayats,” he said.

He further explained the various water efficient practices in Banana and Coconut plantation, which are done with technical partnership with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. 

“These partnerships have resulted in saving about 25-40 per cent of water along with productivity enhancement. Farmers are involved actively and have contributed up to 20 per cent towards the conservation works taken up in Bhavani basin. They have involved in operation and maintenance of these renovated structures,” he said.
