Coimbatore: A few days ago, Jeeva Nagar residents had to vacate their residences after a prolonged period of tussle with authorities to retain their houses. Of the 247 houses, 145 houses had been vacated a few months ago and CCMC officials tried evicting the rest, last month.

The residents demanded houses at Kaapikadai Housing Board unit in Saravanampatty, instead of Keeranatham and had requested a few more days to vacate. After a discussion with the Coimbatore MP, P R Natarajan and the residents, Corporation officials postponed the eviction drive. Unfortunately, on the very same day, two persons died of electrocution while trying to help their relatives vacate their homes. Last week, the remaining residents vacated bringing the eviction drive to a close.
CCMC Commisioner, Sravan Kumar had agreed to look into the demands of the vacated residents. After holding discussions with officials, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board handed over tokens to 97 families for allotments at Kaapikadai.
